He/Him, 21, Monrovia CA
Q. What do you think your room says about you?
- It shows how I surround myself with objects that are valuable to me, but more importantly, objects that inspire me. These objects can range from a book to a texture of some sort. Everything has value in their own way.
Q. Do you think your future room will have the same qualities as your room now?
- The qualities that make up my room always stem from inspiration and valuables. I can confidently say that those qualities will always carry over to any space that I choose to occupy.
Q. In some photographs, I may have asked you what items or pieces of your room meant the most to you, why did you choose those items? What connection do you have with these objects?
-The object that I chose when asked this question was the plant that my girlfriend gave to me for my birthday. The “Croton Mammy” (plant) that she gifted me is very dear to my heart because it can symbolize growth and nurturing in my life.
Q. Did you clean your room before it was photographed? I gave no instruction to clean or prepare your room in any way. If you did choose to clean it why? And if you didn't choose to clean it, how come?
- On your 20 minute drive to my house, I decided to go ahead and dust off the neglected shirt that was occupying the corner of my bed. I figured it would be a burden for the both of us, so I tossed it in the dump of dirty laundry. I was quite nervous to be honest, the feeling was equivalent to getting ready for a first date. I guess that goes to show how my room is an intimate space for me.
Q. Are you home often? (if so why?) Do you spend the most time in your room or elsewhere?(if so why?)
-There are two answers for this question because I tend to be out and about as much as I can, but recently I’ve been cooped up in my room due to the pandemic and remote learning. It’s not the ideal thing for me to be in my room for many hours out of the day because I get restless quite quickly.
Q. Would you say you're proud of your room? Do you feel like it suits you well? (alternate question: Do you feel like it is a good representation of who you are/how you project yourself?)
- It would be quite silly of me to say that I am proud of my room because that seems like an egotistical answer. It makes it seem like it was some sort of an achievement of mine. Anyways... I’m happy with my room.
Q. How do you feel about where you are in life right now? Are you content with how everything is going and how you are portrayed?
- There are times in my life where I think I’m an absolute fuck up, and there are times where I’m the happiest I can be. In the past year I’ve been the happiest I’ve ever been. It’s truly a privilege to be surrounded by such talented, caring, and smart individuals that inspire me to do better in all aspects in my life. When it comes to being content with how everything is going, I’m not content about it at all. There’s so much hate and wrongdoing in our world that needs to be changed, so that we can create a better environment and atmosphere for each and every one of us.
Q. Do you consider yourself a social person, or do you fall somewhere in between social and antisocial? (explain)
-I would be lying if I were to say that I was a social person. It’s safe to say that I fall right in-between the two parties of social and antisocial. I’m right on the cusp of being a social person, but I’m terribly shy when it comes to meeting new people in my life.
Q. Why did you want to be a part of this series?
-I think it’s important to support your friends in whatever they want to do, and I was looking at this room series in that way. I’m also infatuated with the idea of a room series, so I was more than excited to be a part of this project.
Q. How do you think you'll react to these photos later on in life?
-When looking back on your past self there’s always embarrassment and a feeling of change. I think it’s quite ethical to feel that way towards your past life. When looking back on these photos in the future, it’ll be refreshing to see how my surroundings were at the time.
Q. Did you have any following statements about your room? Anything you want people to take away from these photos?
-Individuality is what makes a person unique! The level of influence that your surroundings make on yourself is significant.
