ALEXANDRIA (IRIE)
She/Her, 21, Fontana CA

Q. What do you think your room says about you?
- I think it says that I am a collector. I got a lot of clothes, figures/ vinyl toys, magazines, posters, but everything is organized and displayed in a certain way. Because of this, another thing my room says that I am a neat and a controlled type of person.
Everything in my room is focused on pop culture. All my posters, figures/toys, t-shirts
connect/represent/reference pop culture in some type of way. Specifically, most items in my room
reference movies and cartoons (I have a vintage ceramic kangaroo tray on my table that I keep
my jewelry in, and it’s the same type that Bruce Willis’s character has in Pulp Fiction. It can be
seen in the scene when he goes back home to get his watch). What I described, what’s in my
room, and that random piece of movie trivia says/shows that I am also a pop culture nerd.

Q. Do you think your future room will have the same qualities as your room now?

- I think that my room is a preview of how my future home will look like, rather than just my room. I
think it’s going to be decorated very similar but with a more mature pallet to it; posters will be
framed, more shelves to properly display my random things, maybe colors not as bright. I think
my room now is a good reflection of me, and I want to stick with that vibe for the future.

Q. In some photographs, I may have asked you what items or pieces of your room meant the most
to you, why did you choose those items? What connection do you have with these objects?

- The items that I picked that were the most important to me were my Adidas Jeremy Scott Wings
sneakers and my Elvira Mistress of the Dark patch that is autographed by her and dedicated to
me. It’s pretty funny, because I feel that these two items are so me. Jeremy Scott and Elvira are
two of my favorite pop culture icons.
Jeremy Scott is the Andy Warhol of fashion. I think he is really punk. He gave the middle finger to
the fashion industry through his wild and fun collections and showed that fashion does not have
to be taken so seriously. And for the industry, to respect that and appreciate it is so dope to me.
He inspired me to pursue my education/career in the fashion industry, like when I grow up, I want
to be like him (for reals). Having these sneakers and looking at them every day honestly gives me
motivation to stay and keep being creative and to be myself.
Elvira is a horror icon. I consider her one of my female role models growing up, and even now.
She’s beautiful, funny, charming, and tough. She looked and acted different then any other
woman I had seen on tv, and I was drawn to that when I was little, and I still do. She is fucking
cool, simple as that.

Q. Did you clean your room before it was photographed? I gave no instruction to clean or prepare
your room in any way. If you did choose to clean it why? And if you didn’t choose to clean it,
how come?

- I did clean my room before you showed up, but I do that every morning. It’s a natural instinct/force of habit. It is so satisfying for me to come home to a clean room after a long day. I have a lot of stuff in my room, so I also feel I need to be organized, so it is not so overwhelming. I have a lot of collectables and things to look at, so I feel that it’s only right to display them in a neat way/setting
as well.

Q. Are you home often? (if so why?) Do you spend the most time in your room or elsewhere? (if so
why?)

- I don’t spend most of my hours at home. I am either at school, work, or out with my friends. But
when I am home, I am spending most of my time in my room. My room is like a sanctuary to me. I
am surrounded by things that bring me joy in a clean space. I got my TV to watch my movies and
cartoons, my speaker to listen to music, my magazines; it’s the perfect relaxation and zen space
for me.

Q. Would you say you’re proud of your room? Do you feel like it suits you well? (alternate question:
Do you feel like it is a good representation of who you are/how you project yourself?)

- I feel that my room represents me big time. I think a lot of people can say their room is their safe space, in here is where I can be myself. I think first impressions of me is that I am serious and quiet, but when you come into my room it says something else; and I kind of like that.

Q. How do you feel about where you are in life right now? Are you content with how everything is
going and how you are portrayed?

- I am honestly living my best life right now. I am surrounded by people who love, support, and
understand me (from the way I dress, the music I listen to, my references, literally everything) and
that’s all I’ve ever asked for. I got nothing to complain about.

Q. What genre or groups do you think you belong to?

- I guess I would say I belong to the “creatives” group. I don’t know actually, defining what type of
group I am in sounds kind of like a high school clique type of thing
I would say though, I am in group of creative and talented friends that appreciate, support, and
understand me, and one another, and this is something that I have never had/experienced
before. I am very grateful for that.

Q. Do you consider yourself a social person, or do you fall somewhere in between social and
antisocial? (explain)

- I do consider myself a social person. I enjoy going out and spending time with friends, it keeps
me sane. But, I also consider myself as a shy person, rather than antisocial; I do not like being the
center of attention. I don’t know how to elaborate more on that (lol).

Q. Why did you want to be a part of this series?

- Well besides being constantly asked to do it ;)
My room has honestly been like this since middle school. As the years go by things have been
added and taken away. But, it’s that time in my life right now were big changes are going to
happen, specifically moving out. So, I felt that it was the right time for it to be documented. I am
going to miss it, I really grew up in that in room. It’s going to feel good when I look back at these
pictures later on.

Q. How do you think you’ll react to these photos later on in life?

- It’s going to put a smile on my face when I see these photos later on, simple as that.

Q. Did you have any following statements about your room? Anything you want people to take
away from these photos?

- I would like to give a shoutout to my parents.
They allowed me to decorate my room in any way that I wanted. And, it’s because of them I am so
into pop culture; they are ones that showed me the movies, cartoons, music. These things really
shaped who I am now.
Visiting hours for the room is by appointment only, if you would like to schedule a visit please
contact my assistant, thank you.
